News and General Information
We would like to thank all of those who recognized us in our EMS Week
Celebration.  This year's theme was, "THERE WHEN YOU NEED US."  We
really appreciate all the hard work and time put in to the different events that
we were welcomed to.  It really did mean a lot, to all of us.
Then & Now...

The Piedmont Rescue Squad was established in 1965. In the beginning all personnel were strictly volunteer. They
were called at their homes when an emergency occurred. The ambulances were converted station wagons and
there was minimal training among the personnel. These individuals provided the best they could with what they
had available. Through the dedication of these individuals and the support of the community, the Piedmont
Rescue Squad has grown to become a top-notch emergency medical services provider.

Currently, the Piedmont Rescue Squad operates five fully advanced life support ambulances and a heavy rescue
truck equipped with extrication equipment. Three crews are staffed during the day and two at night, all at the
Paramedic level. The squad serves as the primary ambulance transport service for Piedmont and surrounding
communities. Coverage area extends into four counties: Calhoun, Cherokee, Etowah, and Cleburne. The
coverage area is large and extends in an approximate 20-mile radius from the station. The squad has grown to
about 50 members with the majority being full-time and part-time paid personnel. Although most members are
paid, there are still volunteers that give of their time.

Along with providing ambulance coverage for emergency calls received through 911, the squad provides non-
emergency transports for patients in extended care facilities and nursing homes. We provide service for all
residents requiring transport from Piedmont Healthcare Center and are also primary call for all non-emergency
transports from Jacksonville Health and Rehab. We also provide scheduled dialysis transports from both
locations. The squad provides football game coverage ranging from pee-wee to high school games for three
different schools. The squad averages approximately 300-350 calls per month.

The Piedmont Rescue Squad provides in-house training and continuing education for its employees and
neighboring services. The squad has approximately ten providers that are certified instructors in various
emergency and training applications. There are also six Paramedics that have attended the Critical Care
Emergency Transport Program at UAB. As well as offering training, the squad serves as a rotational site for
Gadsden State Community College EMT students transitioning through their training to become an Emergency
Medical Technician.

Over the years, we have developed a close working relationship with Jacksonville Medical Center and it’s
employees. Our first defibrillator program was developed in conjunction with JMC.

Our current off-line medical director, Dr. Stephen Jones, is affiliated with Gadsden Regional Medical Center and
provides insight and training evaluation for our service.

Piedmont Rescue is dispatched by Piedmont Police Department's
Communications Officers.  Calls from all four counties that we cover,
come into the communications center.  Once the needed information
is obtained, dispatchers pass the information on to EMS/Rescue
crews.  While units are responding, the dispatchers keep crews
updated on call data.  Dispatch functions as an extremely important
role of our day to day operations.

Based on the information that was conveyed to our dispatchers, the Paramedic and EMT will decide what
equipment is needed to properly evaluate and treat the patient.

Once patient contact is made, the Paramedic and EMT will examine the patient.  During this examination period,
be prepared to provide the following information:

I- Name, age and birth date of patient.
II- Medical history of patient.
III- Any known allergies to drugs and other substances
IV- Name of patient's doctor and medications currently being taken by patient.

Once the patient has been evaluated, the need for proper treatment and or transport will be determined.  Based
on the severity of the illness or injury, the ambulance crew will decide along with the patient and/or family the
proper hospital to transport the patient to.
What should you expect when then ambulance arrives?
